Speaking the Language of Faux Foliage. Let me tell you about a conversation that still makes me laugh—and cringe—in equal measure. A few years ago, I was working with a wonderful client who was decorating her new home. She pointed to a stunning artificial palm in my studio and said, “I love that faux plant. How much is it?”
I smiled and said, “That’s actually our most popular silk tree.”
She looked confused. “But it’s not silk, is it? It feels like plastic.”
I explained that Silk Plant is the traditional name, but it’s actually made of polyester —and suddenly, we were speaking two different languages. She thought “silk” meant actual silk. I thought everyone knew the term was just industry shorthand. Neither of us was wrong—but we weren’t communicating.

Artificial Plant – Faux Foliage The Umbrella Term

Artificial Plant is the general name for any man-made plant designed to imitate a real one. It’s the broadest, most neutral term in the industry. When you say “artificial plant,” you’re covering everything from a tiny desk succulent to a 3-meter palm tree. It’s the safest, most accurate word to use when you’re being formal.

I’ve noticed that high-end retailers often avoid the word “artificial.” They prefer “faux” or “designer botanicals” because it sounds more sophisticated. But if you’re reading a product description and it says “artificial,” you’re getting the honest, straightforward version.

Faux Plant / Silk Plant are often used interchangeably, but they have slightly different connotations. Faux Plant comes from the French word for “false.” It’s elegant, sophisticated, and implies a deliberate design choice rather than a cheap imitation. You’ll hear it in interior design circles and high-end retail.
Silk Plant is trickier. Here’s the thing: Silk Plant is the traditional name, but it’s actually made of polyester. Historical silk plants were made from real silk, but modern manufacturing uses polyester, nylon, and other synthetic fabrics. The name stuck, even though the material changed. If you see “silk plant” on a label, don’t expect actual silk. You’re getting high-quality polyester fabric, which is excellent for realistic flowers—just not what the name suggests.

Single Stem Flower is exactly what it sounds like: a flower on a single stem, usually paired with leaves and flower heads. It’s the basic unit of floral arrangements. If you’re building custom arrangements, you’ll buy single stem flowers in bulk. If you’re buying a pre-made bouquet, it might contain many single stems bundled together.
What to look for:
Stem length: How long is the stem? Longer stems are more versatile.
Bloom size: How large is the flower head? Measured in diameter (in centimeters) .
Number of stems per bunch: Often sold in bunches of 6, 12, or 24.
When I’m designing for a wedding, I always buy extra single stem flowers. They’re the most versatile component—I can use them in bouquets, centerpieces, and even as accent pieces in larger installations.

Artificial Tree / Faux Tree

Artificial Tree / Faux Tree refers to a larger plant that mimics a tree.
Key categories:
Artificial Palm Tree: One of the most common export categories. These mimic tropical palm trees and are popular in hotels, resorts, and beach-themed spaces.
Artificial Coconut Tree: Includes artificial coconut palms, often with visible coconuts for added realism.
Artificial Olive Tree: A modern favorite for Mediterranean-inspired decor.
Artificial Fiddle-Leaf Fig: The trendy indoor statement plant.
When you’re buying a plant that’s over 1.2 meters (4 feet) tall and has a tree-like structure.
The best artificial trees have a PU Foam Trunk / Artificial Bark surface with simulated bark texture. If the trunk is smooth, shiny, or obviously plastic, it’s a cheap product.

Artificial Green Wall / Moss Wall

Artificial Green Wall / Moss Wall is used for indoor decoration. It’s exactly what it sounds like: a vertical installation of artificial foliage and moss designed to mimic a living wall.
Characteristics:
Often made from PE (Polyethylene) or polyester panels
Can be pre-grown panels or modular tiles
Typically includes artificial moss, ferns, and tropical foliage
Often mounted on backing panels or frames
Key component: The Moss Topper / Moss Mat—a layer of artificial moss placed on top of the foam base, covering the surface of the pot.
Green walls are increasingly popular in commercial spaces.
For commercial spaces, office lobbies, and any application where a living wall is impractical.
A good artificial green wall is almost indistinguishable from a real one—at least from a few feet away. The key is the quality of the foliage and the density of the installation.

Artificial Vine / Garland – The Wrapped Decoration

Artificial Vine / Garland is a long, flexible strand of foliage, flowers, or both. It’s designed to be wrapped, draped, or hung.
Characteristics:
Wrapped decoration: Perfect for winding around banisters, railings, or pillars.
Artificial Ivy: A specific type of vine with climbing or trailing decoration.
Stem Length: The distance from the cut to the top, which determines how far it will trail.
Vines and garlands are versatile decoration tools.
For weddings, events, holiday decorations, and any space that needs a touch of greenery without committing to a full plant.
A high-quality vine should have a Bendable Stem—a built-in wire core that lets you shape it to your needs. If the vine won’t hold its shape, it’s frustrating to work with.

Artificial Grass / Turf – The Ground Cover

Artificial Grass / Turf is exactly what it sounds like: a synthetic surface designed to look like real grass.
Characteristics:
Suitable for mats or rolls
Used in landscaping, sports fields, and indoor applications
Often made from PE (Polyethylene) or polypropylene (PP)
If you’re buying turf, you need to know the difference between indoor and outdoor grades. Outdoor turf needs UV protection.
For lawns, playgrounds, rooftop gardens, and any application where real grass is impractical.
I’ve used artificial turf for photo shoots and event installations. It’s surprisingly versatile—and it never needs watering!

Artificial Succulent – The Fleshy Favorite

Artificial Succulent is a category that includes cacti, aeoniums, echeverias, and other fleshy plants.
Characteristics:
Made from PE, TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) , or EVA foam
Soft rubber texture in high-quality versions
Often used for office desks, windowsills, and small spaces
Succulents have been trendy for years. The artificial versions are popular because they look realistic without needing any care.
For small spaces, office desks, and any place where a living succulent would struggle to survive.
The most realistic artificial succulents are made from TPE, which has a Soft Touch / Velvety feel and a rubber-like texture that mimics real succulents. Cheaper versions are hard and shiny.

Artificial Potted Plant – The Container Classic

Artificial Potted Plant is a general term for any plant that comes with a container. It’s one of the most common categories for home decoration.
Characteristics:
Includes containers—the pot is part of the product
Available in countless sizes and styles
Often sold as ready-to-display
Key components:
Plastic Pot / Nursery Pot: Standard black or green plastic pot used inside the decorative outer pot.
Liner / Inner Pot: Usually black plastic, placed inside a decorative outer pot.
Weight Pad / Counterweight: For preventing tipping.
When you buy a potted plant, you’re getting the whole package—plant, pot, and base.
For home decor, office spaces, and any situation where you want a ready-to-use plant.
Always check the Overall Height of a potted plant. The height includes the pot, so a 120 cm plant might have only 90 cm of foliage if the pot is 30 cm tall.

Loose Foliage / Pick – The Versatile Component

Loose Foliage / Pick is a catch-all term for single branches, leaves, or floral stems sold separately.
Characteristics:
Pick: Refers to a single branch or leaf with a short stem, often used as an accent.
Loose Foliage: Individual stems or branches of foliage, sold separately from plants or arrangements.
Can be sold separately: Allows for custom arrangements and replacements.
If you’re a florist or a DIY enthusiast, loose foliage and picks are essential. They give you flexibility to create custom arrangements and extend the life of an existing plant by swapping damaged leaves.
For custom arrangements, fillers, and any situation where you need to add greenery to an existing design.
I always keep a box of loose foliage and picks in my studio. They’re the secret weapon for filling gaps, adding texture, and creating custom arrangements on the fly.
